1998 Chateau Fortia (Chateauneuf du Pape)
Robert Parker:  The wine's deep ruby color is followed by moderately intense aromas of dried herbs, pepper, cassis and blackberry fruit, a silky texture, good freshness, medium to full body, and a corpulent, rich, long finish.  It will be drinkable upon release, and should age well for 10-12 years.  Rating 89-91.  (Wine Advocate, 10/28/2000)
Mark’s comments:  This wine is concentrated, smooth and silky with noticeable cherry-Syrah character.  You may also notice hints of black pepper and Provencal herbs.  It is a versatile red wine that can accompany a variety of hearty autumn and winter meat dishes, including braised beef with root vegetables and beef stews.

1999 Felsina Fontalloro (Tuscany)
Robert Parker:  100% Sangiovese; barrique-aged.  Its deep purple color is followed by a big, sweet, luscious perfume of spicy, toasty oak, cedar, fruitcake, leather, espresso, and black currants.  Medium to full-bodied, with great fruit on the attack and mid-palate, and a long, opulent finish, this dazzling Italian red will drink well for 6-12 years.  Rating 92.  (Wine Advocate, 12/31/2002)
Mark's comments:  This dry red Italian wine is a good accompaniment for baked ham and scalloped potatoes, home-made lasagna, other mild Italian pasta dishes, or anything with which you would serve a top-notch Chianti Classico.

2002 Saddleback Cellars Zinfandel (Napa Valley)
Mark’s comments:  This is a mature, smooth, mild-mannered, subtle style of Zinfandel that gets closer to being like a red Bordeaux or Southern Rhone than just about any other Zinfandel.  Last year I served it with filet mignon, baked potatoes, and salad.  Initially, the wine had flavors of blackberry and mild tannin.  After sitting in the glass for an hour, the wine seemed to lose the tannin and tasted like rasberries with spice (pepper and clove?).  This wine can go nicely with a variety of dishes that aren’t too overpowering or too spicy.  It should go nicely with roast chicken or turkey with stuffing.
